How White van man is finding quitting smoking a drag
No Smoking day will be upon us soon, and current research shows that it increasingly the territory of routine and manual groups in this country. The worse culprits are said to be van drivers, secretaries and builders – much more likely than professionals like managers or doctors.
Research conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows a rapid fall in the desire to smoke amongst the professional types, compared with a much slower reduction amongst manual workers.
BBC Dragon’s Den star and No Smoking Day president Duncan Bannatyne says, “These findings show that whilst we are succeeding in controlling the smoking epidemic amongst the better off, cigarettes are now the primary cause of health inequalities in the UK.”
“There is good news for most smokers – you definitely want to quit, and with the expectation that approximately 1 million will quit smoking on No Smoking Day 2010, the downward trend in smoking looks set to go on”. Add this to the NHS Stop Smoking Services, there probably hasn’t been a better time to stop smoking – you are 4 times more likely to succeed with this type of support.”
Assistant Director of Tobacco Studdies, Andy McEwen from University College London says: “We know it is not due to difference in motivation to quit but those from poorer backgrounds do seem to find it hard to succeed. It could be due to a number of different reasons: availability of cigarettes, less acceptance from society and a higher level of dependence of nicotine”.
Duncan Bannatyne kicks off this year’s No Smoking Day campaign with the launch of a new website (ww.wequit.co.uk), featuring Queen’s song ‘I want to break free’.
Running for 27 years, the No Smoking Day campaign is run by a charity of the same name alongside a range of public health agencies in this country.
