Why do People Smoke - some common answers

Why do people smoke is a good question. People do all sorts of bad things to themselves, smoking is one example. There are so many disadvantages to smoking, the most crucial drawback being that tobacco will harm the health of the smokers as well as those around him/her (i.e. the second hand smokers). Smokers face many problems such as stinky clothes, yellow teeth, burn marks on clothing, etc. These things makes you wonder, why do people smoke?

Most people continue smoking because they are simply addicted to it. Despite a fall in activity and productivity, people still continue to smoke. The nicotine in the cigarettes makes it awfully difficult to quit.

Then why do people smoke when they know it has negative effects on their pocketbook and health? It is widely reported that most people start smoking at a young age. Many of these people that started early started because of a dare or pressure from friends. Most of the smokers who have been smoking heavily for a long time admit that they started smoking during their teens.

Even though they may ask why do smokers smoke, many people are encouraged to take up smoking by tobacco companies because in their advertisements, they show young and fit people having a good time and relaxing while smoking cigarettes. Adults take up smoking for many reasons, stress being a large one. They are under the illusion that smoking helps them calm down. While smoking may help them relax a bit, the longer term effects are awful on their body.

Most people that take up smoking because of a stressful situation will find it very difficult to quit in the future. These smokers will have to have some serious determination to quit smoking later in life. Nicotine is a tough addiction to break. Hopefully this article highlighted why do people smoke.
